Reading and language difficulties and mental health

With colleagues at Macquarie University (Dr Nicholas Badcock), Curtin University (Dr Suze Leitao and Dr Mary Claessen), and the Dyslexia SPELD Foundation (Perth), I am conducting a programme of research that aims to examine and elucidate potential links between reading and language difficulties and mental health outcomes for children and adolescents. The projectwill also attempt to identify potential mechanisms that may account for these negative outcomes.

We hope this research will identify potential psychosocial intervention targets that might be incorporated into existing reading interventions, and thereby improve not only reading outcomes but also child and adolescent mental health.

This research is funded by Healthway (Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation) and a grant from the Research and Development Committee of the School of Psychology and Speech Pathology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Curtin University.
